The impact of the Berlin Wall

·         The Impact of the Berlin Wall:
o   It stopped East Germans escaping to the West and therefore ended the refugee crisis.
o   It allowed Khrushchev to avoid war with America while still appearing strong.
o   It became a powerful symbol of Germany and the division of Europe.

*      Kennedy’s visit to Berlin: Kennedy was unable to prevent the wall’s construction. However, in 1963 he toured West Berlin expressing his feelings of solidarity with its people. Crowds of West Germans lined the streets shouting ‘Kenne-dy – Kenne-dy!” In a famous speech, Kennedy said, “All free men, wherever they live, are citizens of Berlin and therefore as a free man, I take pride in the words: Ich bin ein Berliner.”
