Formation of the NATO and Warsaw Pact

The Berlin Blockade was the first military confrontation between the USSR and the USA throughout the whole of the Cold War. This raised the possibility of war in Europe. Therefore Western Nations established alliances to keep USA in and USSR out. In April 1949 NATO was created. They agreed that if anyone attacked all NATO members would come in defense. NATO went a lot further than the Marshall Plan as it was specifically designed to defend against Communism. The USSR in turn responded with the Warsaw Pact, mirroring the NATO but in the East.
